Answer
When the sediments that rivers hold become very dense, the rivers break into many small rivers called distributaries. These distributaries form a triangular piece of land before joining the sea. This piece of land is known as a delta. The largest delta in the world is the Sundarban Delta. It lies at the mouth of the Ganga and the Brahmaputra rivers and occupies about 4000 square kilometres of area.
The Gangetic Plain is known as the Food Bowl of India because it has a huge deposit of alluvial soil which is very fertile and suitable for agriculture. It is the most populous region in our country and produces a large amount of food crops.
A distributary is a small river that branches off from the main river when the sediments become very dense. These distributaries form a triangular piece of land before joining the sea, which is called a delta.
